The Phoenix Retail Store + Tournament Room
The Phoenix of Westchester retail store, in Scarsdale, just north of New York City, is a daily beehive of pop culture activity! At 5,000 square feet, it is the largest store of its kind in greater New York’s northern tier. Its 2,500-sq-ft meeting space, designed to host ongoing tournaments, comic book shows, signing events and other social activities, is among the largest and most comfortable anywhere.
A visit to The Phoenix is a collector’s and enthusiast’s delight – a fabulous array of collectibles, neatly and logically organized, easy to browse, clearly priced – offered by a highly knowledgeable, experienced, expert, passionate and fun crew!
About The Founder: Joel Rosenberg
 Joel Rosenberg, who began his professional life as a lumberyard owner, eventually gave it up and succumbed to his true passion: comics! Over the years, he frequented a major comic store in Yonkers, New York, The Dragon’s Den, and, as they expanded, made the transition from customer to proprietor by taking an ownership position in the store. In 2005, a landlord dispute led to the closing of Dragon’s Den and Joel plotted his next move. Determined that the concept would be viable in a different location, he teamed up with several former Dragon’s Den employees and opened a new store: figuratively and literally, out of the ashes of the “Dragon,” arose “The Phoenix.”
“I’ve always had an interest in comics,” explains Joel. “There’s a major comics community out there, witness the explosive growth of the New York and San Diego Comicons, from a few people in a small room to hundreds of thousands now partaking yearly. To connect with this community, I found a location with plenty of space, and made into a ‘meet & greet’ place for comic aficionados. We provided the room to display original comic art, create a real community place, for the young kids and the ‘old kids’. I find the crowd intellectually stimulating, with a lot of varied opinions, sort of like discussions on Cheers, about nothing very important – but really interesting! This is such fun for me!”
